Typhoon Kathleen hits the Kant? region, in Japan killing around 1,000-2,000 people

Typhoon Kathleen (known in Japanese as **???????**, “Kasuriin typhoon”) struck the Kant? region of Japan in September 1947 and remains one of the most destructive flood disasters in the country’s post-war history. It made landfall around September 15 after forming several days earlier, bringing with it torrential rains and causing stagnation of frontal weather systems which intensified precipitation over eastern Honsh?.

The human cost was enormous. The disaster killed at least **1,000 to nearly 1,700** people (variously reported numbers around **1,692** or **1,077**, depending on source), and left many more missing or homeless. The damage exposed vulnerabilities in flood defences, especially in densely populated areas around Tokyo, Chiba, Saitama, Tochigi, Gunma, and Ibaraki. In response, over the following decades, Japan invested heavily in flood prevention infrastructure in the Kant? plain, strengthened river embankments, and set up better warning systems.
