Mary, Queen of Scots fled to England in 1568 after being forced to give up the Scottish throne. Her rule in Scotland had become unstable after the murder of her husband, Lord Darnley, and her marriage to the Earl of Bothwell, who many nobles believed was responsible for Darnley’s death. Scottish nobles rebelled against Mary, defeated her forces at the Battle of Langside, and imprisoned her. After escaping captivity, Mary hoped to regain power with the support of her cousin, Queen Elizabeth I of England.

When Mary arrived in England, she expected protection and assistance from Elizabeth I. However, Elizabeth saw Mary as a serious threat because many English Catholics believed Mary had a stronger claim to the English throne. Instead of helping her return to Scotland, Elizabeth kept Mary under close supervision. Although Mary was treated as a queen, she was effectively a prisoner and was moved between castles and manor houses across England.

Mary’s presence in England caused political tension for nearly twenty years. She became the focus of several Catholic plots against Elizabeth, including the Babington Plot of 1586, which aimed to assassinate the English queen. Evidence linked Mary to the conspiracy, and she was put on trial for treason. In 1587, Mary was executed at Fotheringhay Castle, bringing an end to one of the most dramatic rivalries in British history.
