French Revolution: Queen Marie Antoinette is executed.

Marie Antoinette, born in 1755 in Vienna, Austria, was the fifteenth child of Empress Maria Theresa and Emperor Francis I. As part of a political alliance between Austria and France, she married Louis-Auguste, the future King Louis XVI of France, in 1770. At just fourteen, she entered one of Europe’s most powerful and scrutinized courts, Versailles. Her early years there were marked by uncertainty and adaptation, as she struggled to adjust to the rigid etiquette of French royalty and to earn acceptance among courtiers who viewed her as a foreigner.

When Louis XVI ascended the throne in 1774, Marie Antoinette became queen at nineteen. Though initially popular, she quickly gained a reputation for extravagance. Her lavish spending on fashion, jewelry, and entertainment earned her the nickname “Madame Déficit,” especially as France’s economy worsened. She also became a target of vicious rumors and political propaganda that painted her as frivolous and indifferent to the struggles of the French people. Much of this reputation was exaggerated or false, but it damaged her image beyond repair.

As the French Revolution unfolded in 1789, Marie Antoinette became a symbol of royal excess and corruption. Her attempts to influence political decisions, particularly to protect the monarchy, only deepened public mistrust. She and her family were eventually arrested, imprisoned, and stripped of power. Despite offers from her Austrian relatives to negotiate her release, revolutionary fervor made such rescue impossible. Her courage during captivity—especially her composure during her trial—garnered some reluctant admiration, even from her enemies.

Marie Antoinette was executed by guillotine on October 16, 1793, at the age of thirty-seven. Her death marked the end of the Bourbon monarchy’s reign over France and became one of the Revolution’s defining moments. Over time, historical perspectives on her have shifted—from a symbol of tyranny to a tragic figure caught in the storm of political upheaval. Today, she is remembered both for her extravagant lifestyle and for the complex, often misunderstood role she played in one of history’s most transformative periods.
