The City of Chernobyl is evacuated six days after the disaster.

The Chernobyl disaster occurred on April 26, 1986, at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant, then part of the Soviet Union. During a late-night safety test, Reactor No. 4 experienced a sudden power surge that led to explosions and a catastrophic failure of the reactor core. The design of the RBMK reactor, combined with operator errors and inadequate safety protocols, caused the situation to spiral out of control. The explosion blew off the reactor’s heavy steel and concrete lid, exposing the core and releasing massive amounts of radioactive material into the atmosphere.

In the immediate aftermath, firefighters and plant workers were sent in to contain the blaze, often without proper protective equipment or understanding of the radiation risks. Many of these first responders suffered acute radiation sickness, and several died within weeks. Nearby residents in the city of Pripyat were not evacuated until about 36 hours later, by which time they had already been exposed to dangerous levels of radiation. The Soviet government initially downplayed the severity of the accident, delaying international awareness until elevated radiation levels were detected in other parts of Europe.

The environmental impact of the disaster was immense and long-lasting. Radioactive fallout spread across large areas of Europe, contaminating soil, water, and vegetation. A 30-kilometer exclusion zone was established around the plant, forcing the permanent displacement of over 100,000 people. Wildlife in the region experienced both harmful mutations and, paradoxically, population rebounds due to the absence of human activity. The long-term health effects on humans remain debated, though increased rates of thyroid cancer—especially among children—have been strongly linked to the disaster.

In response to the catastrophe, the damaged reactor was encased in a concrete structure known as a sarcophagus, later replaced by the Chernobyl New Safe Confinement, completed in 2016 to better contain the remaining radioactive materials. The disaster had far-reaching political and social consequences, contributing to growing distrust in Soviet leadership and accelerating calls for transparency under policies like glasnost. It also prompted sweeping changes in nuclear safety standards worldwide, influencing how nuclear energy is regulated and managed to this day.
