The founding of the Order of the Garter by King Edward III is announced on St. George’s Day.

The Order of the Garter is the most prestigious and oldest order of chivalry in the United Kingdom, founded by King Edward III in 1348. Deeply rooted in English medieval tradition, it’s reserved for individuals who have made extraordinary contributions to public service or the monarchy. Membership is extremely exclusive—limited to the sovereign, the Prince of Wales, and no more than 24 companions, though additional foreign monarchs and distinguished figures may be admitted as “supernumerary” members. The Order’s emblem, a dark blue garter bearing the motto “Honi soit qui mal y pense” (Old French for “Shame on him who thinks evil of it”), is worn around the left calf for men and on the left arm for women. Ceremonially, members gather annually for a service at St George’s Chapel in Windsor Castle, dressed in elaborate robes and regalia, symbolizing their elite status within the realm of British honors.
