The New York Public Library is dedicated.

The New York Public Library was founded in 1895 through the merger of three major institutions: the Astor Library, the Lenox Library, and the Tilden Trust. The idea behind the merger was to create a free public library that would serve all residents of New York City regardless of social class or background. At the time, many libraries in the United States were private subscription libraries, meaning access was limited to those who could afford membership fees. The consolidation of these collections, supported by philanthropists and civic leaders, helped establish one of the most ambitious public knowledge institutions in American history.

The library’s most recognizable building, the Stephen A. Schwarzman Building on Fifth Avenue in Manhattan, officially opened in 1911. Designed in the Beaux-Arts architectural style by architects Carrère and Hastings, the structure quickly became a symbol of learning and culture in New York City. The famous marble lion statues at the entrance, later nicknamed “Patience” and “Fortitude,” became enduring icons of the institution. The opening of the building marked a major expansion in public access to books, manuscripts, maps, and research materials, attracting scholars and ordinary citizens alike.

Throughout the twentieth century, the New York Public Library expanded its services far beyond its main research branches. It developed an extensive network of neighborhood libraries across the Bronx, Manhattan, and Staten Island, making educational resources available to millions of people. During periods such as the Great Depression and both World Wars, the library served as an important public resource by offering educational programs, job assistance, and community support. It also became internationally respected for its special collections, which include rare books, historical documents, photographs, and archives related to literature, performing arts, and American history.

In the modern era, the New York Public Library has adapted to technological and social changes while maintaining its historic mission of free access to knowledge. The library digitized large portions of its collections, allowing people around the world to access rare materials online. It continues to host public lectures, exhibitions, literacy programs, and educational events for diverse audiences. Today, the institution remains one of the largest and most influential public library systems in the world, serving as both a research center and a community space dedicated to lifelong learning and cultural preservation.
