John Fitch is granted a United States patent for the steamboat.

John Fitch was an American inventor and one of the earliest pioneers in the development of the steamboat. Born in Connecticut in 1743, Fitch worked in several trades before becoming interested in steam-powered transportation. During the 1780s, he began developing the idea of using a steam engine to propel boats along American rivers. At the time, rivers were essential routes for trade and travel, but boats often depended on sails, currents, or human labor. Fitch believed steam power could provide a faster and more reliable method of transportation.

In 1787, Fitch successfully demonstrated a working steamboat on the Delaware River before members of the Constitutional Convention in Philadelphia. His vessel used a steam engine to operate a system of paddles that pushed the boat through the water. Fitch continued improving his designs, and in 1790 he began operating a steamboat carrying passengers between Philadelphia and Trenton, New Jersey. Although his boats demonstrated that steam-powered river travel was practical, the venture struggled financially. The technology was expensive, mechanical problems were common, and there were not enough passengers to make the service profitable.

Fitch never achieved the commercial success he hoped for, and he died in 1798, several years before steamboats became a major form of transportation in the United States. His work nevertheless helped demonstrate the potential of steam navigation. In 1807, Robert Fulton achieved much greater commercial success with the *North River Steamboat*, often called the *Clermont*, which helped establish regular steamboat travel on the Hudson River. Although Fulton became more famous, John Fitch is remembered as an important early innovator whose experiments helped lay the groundwork for the steamboat revolution that transformed American transportation and commerce during the nineteenth century.
