Initial flight of the de Havilland Comet, the first jet-powered airliner took place on 27 July 1949. Its first commercial flight was not until 2 years later.

The de Havilland Comet holds a special place in aviation history as the world’s first commercial jet airliner. Developed by the British aircraft manufacturer de Havilland, it first took to the skies in 1949 and entered service with BOAC (British Overseas Airways Corporation) in 1952. At the time, its sleek, swept-wing design and four jet engines embedded in the wings gave it a futuristic appearance, unmatched speed, and a quieter, smoother ride compared to propeller-driven aircraft. The Comet could cruise at altitudes and speeds far above its piston-powered rivals, drastically reducing travel times on long-haul routes and marking the beginning of the jet age for civilian air travel.

However, the early Comets soon became the subject of intense scrutiny due to a series of high-profile accidents in the mid-1950s. These tragedies were traced back to a then poorly understood phenomenon: metal fatigue caused by repeated pressurization cycles. Investigators found that the Comet’s square-shaped cabin windows and certain structural design choices created stress concentrations, which, over time, led to catastrophic fuselage failures. The aircraft was grounded, and de Havilland engineers undertook extensive redesigns, introducing rounded windows, structural reinforcements, and more rigorous testing methods—advances that would influence the entire aerospace industry.

Following these modifications, later models such as the Comet 4 series returned to service in 1958 with significantly improved safety and performance. These versions were larger, more powerful, and had greater range, enabling them to compete more effectively on transatlantic and other long-haul routes. Despite these improvements, the Comet’s initial setbacks had given rival manufacturers, notably Boeing with its 707 and Douglas with its DC-8, the opportunity to seize a dominant position in the emerging jetliner market. The Comet, while technologically pioneering, would never regain the commercial lead it might have held.

Even so, the legacy of the de Havilland Comet is profound. It established fundamental principles of jet airliner design, introduced the traveling public to the speed and comfort of jet travel, and drove critical advancements in materials science and aerostructural engineering. Beyond commercial service, modified Comets continued flying for decades in military and research roles, most notably as the Hawker Siddeley Nimrod maritime patrol aircraft. Today, preserved Comets in museums serve as a reminder of both the ambition and the hard-earned lessons that shaped modern aviation.
