The United States begins construction of the Panama Canal.

The Panama Canal has a long and complex history shaped by ambition, engineering challenges, and geopolitics. The idea of creating a shortcut between the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans dates back to the early 16th century, when Spanish explorers first recognized the narrowness of the Isthmus of Panama.
