The Helsinki Stock Exchange sees its first transaction.

The **Helsinki Stock Exchange** was founded in 1912, although organized securities trading in Finland had begun several decades earlier. During the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, Finland’s growing industrial economy created increasing demand for a formal marketplace where shares and other securities could be bought and sold. The exchange began operations in Helsinki at a time when Finland was still an autonomous Grand Duchy within the Russian Empire. Its early years were shaped by major political and economic upheavals, including Finnish independence in 1917, the Finnish Civil War in 1918, and the economic instability that followed the First World War.

During the twentieth century, the Helsinki Stock Exchange developed alongside Finland’s transformation from a largely agricultural country into a modern industrial and technological economy. Trading was initially conducted through traditional open-outcry methods, but the exchange gradually modernized its operations and regulatory structure. A major change came in 1989, when Helsinki introduced a fully automated electronic trading system, replacing trading on the physical exchange floor. During the 1990s, Finland’s financial markets became increasingly international, particularly after the country joined the European Union in 1995. The rapid growth of technology companies—most famously **Nokia**—also brought much greater international attention to the Finnish stock market.

The exchange entered a period of consolidation in the late 1990s and early 2000s. In 1997, the Helsinki Stock Exchange merged with Finland’s derivatives exchange, creating HEX, which later expanded into the Baltic countries. In 2003, HEX merged with Sweden’s OM to form OMHEX, bringing the Finnish and Swedish markets under common ownership. Further consolidation followed, and in 2008 the exchange became part of **Nasdaq** following Nasdaq’s acquisition of OMX. Today, the former Helsinki Stock Exchange operates as **Nasdaq Helsinki**, providing a marketplace for shares, bonds and other securities. More than a century after its establishment, it remains the principal securities exchange in Finland and an important component of the integrated Nordic and European financial markets.
