The Hamburg massacre prior to the 1876 United States presidential election results in the deaths of six African-Americans of the Republican Party, along with one white assailant.

The Hamburg Massacre occurred on July 8, 1876, in the small town of Hamburg, South Carolina, during a time of extreme racial and political tension in the Reconstruction-era South. The incident began as a dispute over a local Black militia’s use of a public road during a parade. Two white farmers claimed the militia blocked their passage and later filed a legal complaint. This minor conflict escalated rapidly, fueled by white supremacist groups and political leaders aiming to suppress Black political power, especially as the 1876 elections approached.

A court hearing on the issue was scheduled, and white “redeemers”—armed men largely aligned with the Democratic Party and former Confederates—used it as a pretext to confront and ultimately attack the Black militia. What began as a show of force quickly turned into violence. On July 8, after a standoff, the whites besieged the armory where the militia was stationed. After they surrendered, several Black men were captured and at least six were executed in cold blood. The total death toll is uncertain but may have reached dozens, with all the dead being Black men. No whites were ever prosecuted, despite the obvious extrajudicial killings.

The massacre was part of a broader campaign to restore white Democratic control and undermine Reconstruction. It signaled a clear warning: Black civic participation would be met with deadly resistance. The incident had national repercussions, becoming a flashpoint in the highly contested 1876 presidential election between Rutherford B. Hayes and Samuel J. Tilden. Ultimately, events like the Hamburg Massacre paved the way for the end of Reconstruction and the onset of Jim Crow laws, as white Democrats used violence and intimidation to regain and maintain political dominance across the South.
