Edward Jenner administers the first smallpox inoculation.

Edward Jenner was an English doctor who became famous for developing the first successful vaccine against smallpox, one of the deadliest diseases in human history. During the 18th century, smallpox killed millions of people and left many survivors permanently scarred or blind. Jenner noticed that milkmaids who had previously caught cowpox, a mild disease spread from cows, rarely became infected with smallpox. This observation led him to believe that exposure to cowpox could protect people from the much more dangerous smallpox virus.

In 1796, Jenner carried out his groundbreaking experiment on a young boy named James Phipps. Jenner took material from cowpox sores on the hand of a milkmaid and inserted it into cuts on the boy’s arm. After Phipps recovered from a mild illness, Jenner later exposed him to smallpox, but the boy did not become sick. This experiment demonstrated that cowpox could provide immunity against smallpox. Jenner called this process “vaccination,” a term derived from the Latin word *vacca*, meaning cow.

Before Jenner’s discovery, people used a risky practice called variolation, also known as inoculation, to try to prevent smallpox. Variolation involved exposing healthy individuals to material taken from smallpox sores. Although this method sometimes provided protection, it could also cause severe infections and even death. Jenner’s vaccination method was much safer because cowpox was far less dangerous than smallpox itself. His work quickly spread across Europe and other parts of the world, transforming medical science and public health.

Jenner’s discovery had a lasting impact on humanity and laid the foundation for modern immunology and vaccination programs. Over time, widespread vaccination campaigns dramatically reduced smallpox infections around the globe. In 1980, the World Health Organization officially declared smallpox eradicated, making it the first human disease to be completely eliminated. Jenner’s work is still remembered today as one of the greatest medical achievements in history.
