Hundred Years’ War: Start of the Battle of Jargeau.
The Battle of Jargeau, fought in June 1429 during the Hundred Years’ War, marked one of the earliest major victories led by Joan of Arc after the lifting of the Siege of Orléans. The battle took place in the town of Jargeau along the Loire River in France, where English forces under the command of William de la Pole, the Earl of Suffolk, had fortified the town against French attacks. At this stage of the war, the English controlled large portions of northern France, and their military dominance had severely weakened French morale. Joan of Arc’s arrival, however, inspired renewed confidence among French troops and leadership, helping to shift momentum in favor of the French crown.
The French army, commanded jointly by Joan of Arc and the Duke of Alençon, launched an assault on Jargeau on June 11 and 12, 1429. Before the attack, Joan reportedly urged the English defenders to surrender peacefully, but her offer was rejected. The French forces then bombarded the town’s walls with artillery before advancing into direct combat. During the fighting, Joan of Arc was struck in the head by a stone projectile while climbing a ladder against the town’s defenses, but she survived and quickly returned to encourage her soldiers. Her determination became a symbol of courage and divine purpose for the French army.
As the French troops breached the walls, fierce fighting erupted inside the town. The English defenders were gradually overwhelmed despite their strong defensive position. William de la Pole was eventually captured, along with many English soldiers, while others were killed attempting to flee. The French victory at Jargeau demonstrated the growing effectiveness of coordinated French attacks and highlighted the weakening English hold over the Loire Valley. The battle also proved that Joan of Arc’s influence extended beyond morale, as she played an active role in military operations and inspired aggressive action from the French commanders.
The victory at Jargeau had significant consequences for the Hundred Years’ War because it opened the way for additional French successes along the Loire campaign. Soon after, the French achieved victories at Meung-sur-Loire, Beaugency, and the decisive Battle of Patay, which further weakened English military power in France. These victories helped secure the path for the coronation of Charles VII of France at Reims later in 1429, an event that strengthened the legitimacy of the French monarchy. Although the Hundred Years’ War would continue for many years, the Battle of Jargeau represented a crucial turning point that demonstrated the revival of French resistance and the growing decline of English dominance in the conflict.
