The IBM Personal Computer is released.
The IBM Personal Computer, officially released on August 12, 1981, marked a turning point in the history of computing. Designated as the IBM 5150, it was IBM’s first major entry into the personal computer market, a space then dominated by companies like Apple, Commodore, and Tandy. Unlike IBM’s larger mainframes and minicomputers, the IBM PC was designed for individual use and small business applications. Its open architecture, which used readily available off-the-shelf components, allowed other manufacturers to create compatible hardware and software. This decision, intentional or not, helped establish industry standards for the personal computer market.
Powered by the Intel 8088 processor running at 4.77 MHz and bundled with Microsoft’s PC DOS operating system, the IBM PC was notable for balancing professional-grade reliability with consumer accessibility. It could be configured with between 16 KB and 256 KB of RAM, supported both monochrome and color graphics adapters, and offered a range of peripherals including floppy disk drives and printers. While its base price was relatively high—around $1,565 (without monitor or disk drives)—its build quality and IBM’s reputation for business trustworthiness quickly made it a preferred choice for corporate offices and government agencies. The machine also benefitted from IBM’s strong distribution channels and marketing campaigns.
The impact of the IBM PC was enormous. Its open design led to a flood of “IBM-compatible” systems from other manufacturers, sparking an explosion in the software industry and cementing Microsoft’s DOS as the de facto standard operating system. This compatibility wave made PCs more affordable and widely available, accelerating their adoption in homes as well as businesses. In many ways, the IBM PC set the blueprint for the modern personal computer ecosystem, influencing hardware design, operating systems, and market dynamics for decades to come. Even though IBM eventually exited the PC market, the legacy of the 5150 lives on in the architecture and conventions still present in today’s computers.
