Spain declares war on the Kingdom of Great Britain, and the Great Siege of Gibraltar begins.

The Great Siege of Gibraltar began in 1779 when Spain and France attempted to capture Gibraltar from Britain during the wider conflict of the American Revolutionary War. Gibraltar was a strategically important fortress located at the entrance to the Mediterranean Sea, and control of it allowed Britain to dominate naval trade and military movements in the region. Spanish and French forces hoped that by cutting off supplies and bombarding the fortress, they could force the British garrison into surrender. The siege quickly became one of the longest and most famous military operations of the eighteenth century.

The British defenders, commanded by General George Augustus Eliott, endured years of hardship as food, ammunition, and supplies became scarce. Despite constant attacks, the defenders used Gibraltar’s strong fortifications and heavy artillery to resist enemy assaults. One of the most significant events of the siege occurred in 1782 when the Spanish and French launched a major attack using specially designed floating batteries intended to withstand British cannon fire. However, the British heated their cannonballs and fired them at the attacking ships, setting many of the batteries ablaze and causing the assault to fail disastrously.

The Great Siege finally ended in 1783 when peace negotiations connected to the American Revolutionary War brought hostilities to a close. Britain successfully retained control of Gibraltar, strengthening its position as a dominant naval power. The siege became celebrated in British history as a symbol of endurance, military skill, and determination under extreme conditions. Even today, Gibraltar remains a British Overseas Territory, and the events of the Great Siege continue to hold an important place in its historical identity.
