The Space Shuttle Enterprise is unveiled by NASA.

The **Space Shuttle Enterprise** was the first orbiter built as part of NASA’s Space Shuttle program and played an important role in preparing the United States for reusable spacecraft operations. Originally designated **OV-101**, Enterprise was completed in 1976 and was initially going to be named *Constitution*. Following a public campaign by fans of the television series *Star Trek*, President Gerald Ford approved the name *Enterprise*. Members of the *Star Trek* cast and creator Gene Roddenberry attended the shuttle’s public rollout ceremony at the Rockwell International facility in Palmdale, California, on September 17, 1976.

Unlike the Space Shuttles that later travelled into orbit, Enterprise was not equipped with engines or a fully functional heat shield and was never intended to fly in space in its original configuration. Instead, NASA used it for atmospheric and ground testing. Its most famous trials were the **Approach and Landing Tests of 1977**, during which Enterprise was carried into the air on the back of a modified Boeing 747 Shuttle Carrier Aircraft. Some tests involved the shuttle remaining attached to the aircraft, while others saw Enterprise released at high altitude so astronauts could glide it to a runway landing. These flights demonstrated that the shuttle could successfully maneuver and land like an unpowered glider after returning from space.

Enterprise was subsequently used for vibration tests, launch-pad checks, and other experiments that helped NASA prepare for operational Space Shuttle missions. Although there were proposals to modify Enterprise for orbital flight, the cost proved too high, and NASA instead expanded its fleet with other orbiters. After its testing career ended, Enterprise became an important historical exhibit. It is now displayed at the **Intrepid Museum in New York City**, where visitors can see the pioneering spacecraft that helped pave the way for *Columbia*, *Challenger*, *Discovery*, *Atlantis*, and *Endeavour*. Enterprise never reached space itself, but the knowledge gained from testing it contributed significantly to the Space Shuttle program that followed.
