The 1812 Fire of Moscow dies down after destroying more than three-quarters of the city.

The **Fire of Moscow in 1812** was one of the most dramatic events of Napoleon’s invasion of Russia. On 14 September 1812, Napoleon Bonaparte and his Grande Armée entered Moscow after defeating the Russian army at the bloody Battle of Borodino a week earlier. Napoleon expected the capture of Russia’s historic capital to force Tsar Alexander I to negotiate peace. Instead, he found a city largely abandoned by its inhabitants. Moscow was not the political capital of Russia at the time—St Petersburg held that role—but it remained an important cultural, religious, and economic centre.

Soon after the French entered Moscow, fires began breaking out across the city. Strong winds helped the flames spread rapidly through neighbourhoods filled with wooden buildings, and within several days much of Moscow had been destroyed. The exact responsibility for the fire remains debated. Russian authorities appear to have deliberately destroyed or prepared to destroy some supplies and buildings to prevent them from benefiting the French, while looting, accidental fires, and the disorder accompanying the occupation probably contributed as well. Napoleon was temporarily forced to leave the Kremlin as the flames threatened the complex. By the time the fires subsided, thousands of buildings had been destroyed and a large portion of Moscow was in ruins.

The destruction of Moscow helped turn Napoleon’s invasion into a catastrophe. Alexander I refused to negotiate, leaving Napoleon’s army stranded in a devastated city with inadequate food and supplies as winter approached. After waiting for more than a month, Napoleon ordered his forces to leave Moscow on 19 October 1812. The French retreat became disastrous as the army suffered from hunger, disease, freezing temperatures, Russian attacks, and the loss of horses and equipment. Although the burning of Moscow alone did not defeat Napoleon, it deprived his army of the secure winter base and supplies he had hoped to obtain and became one of the defining episodes of the failed 1812 Russian campaign.
