The Battle of Vyazma took place on November 3, 1812, during Napoleon’s retreat from Moscow, as part of the larger French invasion of Russia. After the catastrophic fire in Moscow and the onset of harsh winter conditions, Napoleon’s Grande Armée began its westward withdrawal toward Smolensk. The Russian army, under Generals Kutuzov, Miloradovich, and Platov, sought to harass and cut off the retreating French columns. Vyazma, a small town west of Moscow, became a critical point because several French corps—Eugène de Beauharnais’s IV Corps, Davout’s I Corps, and Ney’s III Corps—were spread thin along the road, making them vulnerable to coordinated Russian attacks.

On the morning of November 3, General Miloradovich caught up with the rear of Davout’s corps, launching a fierce assault that took advantage of the French army’s stretched and disorganized retreat. The Russians attacked from multiple directions, pressing the French rearguard while Cossack cavalry threatened their flanks and baggage trains. Despite being outnumbered, Davout’s men fought stubbornly, buying time for the rest of the army to regroup. The battle descended into chaos, with Russian artillery pounding the congested French columns and French units struggling to maintain order amid the cold, confusion, and dwindling supplies.

By evening, Napoleon’s forces managed to escape further disaster, but the French suffered significant losses—several thousand men, wagons, and guns were lost in the fighting and ensuing retreat. The Battle of Vyazma, though not a decisive victory in itself, symbolized the growing collapse of the Grande Armée’s cohesion. Russian morale soared, while the French soldiers, exhausted and demoralized, faced the worsening Russian winter with dwindling strength. The engagement demonstrated how Russian persistence and attrition tactics steadily eroded Napoleon’s once-mighty army long before it reached the Berezina River and the ultimate end of the 1812 campaign.
