The Boers begin their 118-day siege of British-held Ladysmith during the Second Boer War.

The Siege of Ladysmith was one of the most dramatic episodes of the Second Boer War, lasting from November 2, 1899, to February 28, 1900. Situated in Natal, South Africa, Ladysmith became a focal point when Boer forces from the South African Republic (Transvaal) and the Orange Free State encircled the town shortly after the outbreak of war. The British garrison, numbering around 13,000 troops under Sir George White, found itself cut off from relief and supplies as the Boers entrenched themselves on the surrounding hills. The Boers’ goal was to neutralize a large British force early in the conflict, hindering Britain’s ability to project power across the region.

Life inside the besieged town quickly deteriorated. Shelling from Boer artillery was a daily occurrence, and food shortages soon took a heavy toll on both soldiers and civilians. Horses, mules, and even emergency rations became scarce, leading to severe hunger and disease outbreaks. Makeshift hospitals overflowed with the wounded and ill, while morale faltered under the constant bombardment. Despite this, the defenders held firm, maintaining a network of trenches and outposts that kept the Boers at bay. The siege also became a significant propaganda tool for both sides—portrayed by the British as a story of endurance and by the Boers as a demonstration of their strength and resolve.

Relief finally came after several failed attempts, when General Redvers Buller’s forces broke through Boer lines at the Battle of the Tugela Heights in late February 1900. The British entered Ladysmith on February 28, ending 118 days of siege. The lifting of the siege marked a turning point in British fortunes during the early phase of the war, boosting morale at home and signaling the eventual shift in momentum toward British victory. However, the episode also exposed major weaknesses in British military planning and logistics, lessons that would shape their later strategy in South Africa.
