This means he must be speaking in his official capacity as the supreme teacher of all Christians and intending to define a doctrine that is binding for the entire Church. It’s not a claim that the Pope is infallible in everything he says or does—only under very specific, formal conditions.

Historically, the concept of papal infallibility developed over centuries, rooted in the belief that the Church, guided by the Holy Spirit, cannot err in its essential teachings. The seeds of the idea can be seen as early as the writings of early Church Fathers like St. Augustine and later in medieval theological reflections, particularly from scholars like St. Thomas Aquinas. However, the political and doctrinal crises of the 19th century—especially growing secularism and the loss of the Papal States—pushed the Church to formalize and assert this authority more clearly. The 1870 definition was part theological, part strategic, reaffirming the Pope’s role amid an increasingly fragmented religious and political landscape.

In practice, papal infallibility has been exercised extremely rarely. The most often-cited examples are the definitions of the Immaculate Conception of Mary (1854) and her Assumption into Heaven (1950)—both of which, interestingly, occurred before and after Vatican I but were considered to fulfill the criteria. Critics often see the dogma as authoritarian or a barrier to reform, while defenders argue it’s a safeguard for the Church’s doctrinal unity. Either way, it’s a cornerstone of Catholic ecclesiology, reflecting a broader belief in the Church’s divine guidance and continuity with apostolic tradition.
