The **Heroic Age of Antarctic Exploration** was a period from roughly the late 1890s to the early 1920s when explorers from several nations launched ambitious expeditions to investigate Antarctica, one of the last largely unknown regions of the world. The era was characterised by dangerous journeys undertaken with relatively primitive equipment, limited communications, and little possibility of outside rescue. Expeditions sought to map the continent, conduct scientific research, discover new geographical features, and achieve prestigious goals such as reaching the South Pole. Among the leading explorers of the period were **Robert Falcon Scott, Ernest Shackleton, Roald Amundsen, Douglas Mawson, and Jean-Baptiste Charcot**.

The race to reach the **South Pole** became one of the defining episodes of the era. Norwegian explorer **Roald Amundsen** and his team became the first people confirmed to reach the pole on 14 December 1911, using carefully planned supply depots, skis, and teams of sled dogs. British explorer **Robert Falcon Scott** reached the South Pole with four companions on 17 January 1912, only to discover that Amundsen had arrived more than a month earlier. Scott and his entire polar party died during the return journey. Another famous expedition was **Ernest Shackleton’s Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition of 1914–1917**. Although Shackleton failed in his attempt to cross Antarctica, the survival of his crew after their ship *Endurance* became trapped and was crushed by sea ice became one of the most celebrated stories in the history of exploration.

The Heroic Age was important not only for its dramatic stories of courage and survival but also for its contributions to scientific knowledge. Explorers and scientists collected information about Antarctic **geology, meteorology, biology, oceanography, and geography**, while extensive areas of the continent and surrounding coastline were mapped for the first time. The period is generally considered to have ended in the early 1920s as aircraft, radio communications, motorised transport, and other technological advances began transforming polar exploration. Its legacy remains closely associated with extraordinary endurance and risk, but modern historians also emphasise the scientific achievements, international rivalry, logistical innovation, and human costs that accompanied the exploration of Earth’s most remote continent.
