Soviet Mars 5 space probe is launched.

The **Mars 5** space probe was one of four Soviet spacecraft launched toward Mars in 1973 as part of an ambitious effort to explore the Red Planet. Launched on **25 July 1973** aboard a Proton-K rocket from the Baikonur Cosmodrome, Mars 5 was designed to enter orbit around Mars and study the planet’s atmosphere, surface, and surrounding environment. Unlike its companion **Mars 4**, which failed to enter orbit, Mars 5 successfully reached Mars on **12 February 1974**, becoming one of the Soviet Union’s most successful Mars missions of the era. ([HEASARC][1])

Once in orbit, Mars 5 carried out a variety of scientific observations using cameras, radiometers, spectrometers, and other instruments. It photographed sections of the Martian surface, measured atmospheric temperature and pressure, investigated the composition of the atmosphere, and studied the planet’s magnetic field and charged-particle environment. The spacecraft returned valuable images and scientific measurements that improved understanding of Mars and helped fill important gaps in knowledge left by earlier missions. ([HEASARC][1])

Despite its initial success, the mission was cut short by a failure in the spacecraft’s pressurized instrumentation compartment, which caused a gradual loss of pressure and damaged onboard electronics. After operating for only about two weeks in Martian orbit, communications with Mars 5 ceased on **28 February 1974**. Although its lifespan was much shorter than planned, the probe transmitted enough data to make the mission a partial success. The information it gathered contributed significantly to Soviet and international planetary science and demonstrated that the Soviet Union was capable of placing a spacecraft into orbit around Mars, paving the way for future Mars exploration missions.
