Alexander III is crowned Tsar of Russia.

Alexander III of Russia was the Emperor of Russia from 1881 until his death in 1894. He became tsar after the assassination of his father, Alexander II of Russia, who had introduced several liberal reforms, including the emancipation of the serfs. The murder of his father deeply affected Alexander III and shaped his conservative political beliefs. As a result, he rejected many reformist ideas and believed that Russia should be ruled through strong autocratic power. He worked closely with advisors such as Konstantin Pobedonostsev, who encouraged strict control over society and opposition to democracy and revolution.

During his reign, Alexander III focused on strengthening the authority of the monarchy and preserving traditional Russian values. He introduced policies of “Russification,” which aimed to impose Russian language and culture on the many ethnic groups within the empire. These policies affected regions such as Poland, Finland, and the Baltic territories, often causing resentment among minority populations. At the same time, the government expanded censorship, increased the powers of the secret police, and limited the activities of political opponents. Although his rule was harsh and repressive, Alexander III succeeded in maintaining political stability and preventing major revolutionary uprisings during his lifetime.

Economically, Alexander III supported industrial growth and modernization in Russia. Under ministers such as Sergei Witte, the country expanded its railway network and encouraged the development of heavy industry. One of the most important projects begun during this period was the Trans-Siberian Railway, which connected European Russia with Siberia and the Far East. Alexander III also pursued a cautious foreign policy, preferring peace over military conflict, which earned him the nickname “The Peacemaker.” Despite his successes in maintaining order, the rigid political system he preserved contributed to the social tensions that later exploded during the reign of his son, Nicholas II of Russia.
