Romulus Augustulus, often remembered as the last emperor of the Western Roman Empire, ruled from 475 to 476 CE. His reign marked the symbolic end of ancient Rome and the transition into the medieval era. Born around 460 CE, Romulus was the son of Orestes, a Roman general of Pannonian origin who served under Attila the Hun before rising to power in the Western Empire. Orestes installed his young son on the throne after deposing Emperor Julius Nepos, but because Romulus was merely a teenager, real authority rested in his father’s hands. His nickname “Augustulus,” meaning “little Augustus,” reflected both his youth and the empire’s diminished stature.

During his short rule, the Western Empire was already in ruins. By this time, barbarian tribes controlled most of its former territories, and Italy itself was under the influence of Germanic mercenaries. Romulus ruled from Ravenna, a city chosen for its strong defenses, but his government had little power beyond Italy. The economy was weak, the military relied on foreign soldiers, and imperial authority existed mostly in name. The Eastern Roman Empire in Constantinople, led by Emperor Zeno, viewed Romulus’s rule as illegitimate, since Julius Nepos was still alive and considered the rightful emperor.

Romulus’s downfall came swiftly when the Germanic chieftain Odoacer demanded land in Italy for his troops. When Orestes refused, Odoacer revolted, captured Ravenna, and executed Orestes. In 476 CE, Odoacer deposed Romulus Augustulus but spared his life, recognizing his youth and harmlessness. According to sources like the historian Jordanes, Odoacer sent the imperial insignia to Constantinople, symbolically ending the Western Empire. This event is often cited by historians as the fall of Rome, though in reality, Roman institutions continued under Odoacer’s rule and in the Eastern Empire.

After his deposition, Romulus Augustulus faded from history. Odoacer granted him a pension and allowed him to live in comfort in Campania, possibly at the villa of Lucullus near Naples. Nothing is known about his later life or death, but his story serves as a poignant end to centuries of Roman imperial rule in the West. The empire he nominally led had long been declining, yet his name—Romulus, echoing Rome’s legendary founder, and Augustulus, a diminutive of its first emperor’s title—made his brief reign a poetic closing chapter in Roman history.
