Mount Vesuvius is a stratovolcano located on the Gulf of Naples in Campania, Italy, renowned for its catastrophic eruption in 79 AD that buried the cities of Pompeii, Herculaneum, and Stabiae under thick layers of ash and pumice. Standing at approximately 1,281 meters (4,203 feet) high, Vesuvius is the only active volcano on mainland Europe and one of the most dangerous in the world due to its proximity to densely populated areas, including the city of Naples. Its structure features a large cone partially encircled by the steep rim of the summit caldera, known as Mount Somma, formed from previous eruptions. Vesuvius has erupted numerous times since 79 AD, with notable events occurring in 1631, 1906, and most recently in 1944 during World War II. Despite its current dormancy, the volcano remains a significant threat, with ongoing monitoring efforts aimed at predicting future eruptions and safeguarding the roughly three million people living in its vicinity.
