Greece’s independence is recognized by the Treaty of London.

The Treaty of London was an important agreement signed by Britain, France, and Russia to establish Greece as an independent state after years of conflict with the Ottoman Empire. The treaty followed the Greek War of Independence, which began in 1821 as Greeks fought to free themselves from Ottoman rule. European powers supported the Greek cause for political, cultural, and religious reasons, and the treaty officially recognized Greece as a sovereign kingdom. This marked a major turning point in European diplomacy and the decline of Ottoman control in southeastern Europe.

One of the most significant outcomes of the treaty was the selection of Prince Otto of Bavaria as the first king of Greece. The agreement aimed to create a stable monarchy that would prevent further conflict in the region and maintain the balance of power among European nations. The borders of the new Greek state were also determined, although they were smaller than many Greek nationalists had hoped.
