Mars 7 is launched from the USSR.
The **Mars 7 spacecraft** was one of a series of Soviet missions launched in the early 1970s to explore Mars. It was launched by the Soviet Union on **9 August 1973** aboard a Proton-K rocket from the Baikonur Cosmodrome, as part of a four-spacecraft campaign that also included Mars 4, Mars 5, and Mars 6. Mars 7 consisted of a flyby spacecraft carrying a separate lander designed to descend to the Martian surface. The mission was intended to gather information about the planet’s atmosphere and surface while helping the Soviet Union improve the technology needed for successful landings on Mars.
Mars 7 reached the vicinity of Mars in **March 1974**, after a journey of roughly seven months. As it approached the planet, the spacecraft released its lander on 9 March. However, a malfunction in the spacecraft’s control system caused the lander to be released at the wrong time. Instead of entering the Martian atmosphere, it missed the planet by approximately **1,300 kilometres** and continued into orbit around the Sun. The main spacecraft also passed Mars and entered a heliocentric orbit, bringing the attempted landing to an unsuccessful conclusion.
The failure of Mars 7 was part of the Soviet Union’s difficult experience with Mars exploration during this period. Mars was an exceptionally challenging destination because spacecraft had to travel hundreds of millions of kilometres before carrying out precisely timed manoeuvres without the possibility of immediate intervention from Earth. Mars 7’s companion mission, **Mars 6**, had successfully entered the Martian atmosphere a few days earlier and transmitted atmospheric data during its descent, although communications were lost shortly before or at landing. Mars 4 missed its planned orbit around Mars, while Mars 5 successfully entered orbit but operated for only a short period.
Despite its failure to land, **Mars 7 contributed to the broader development of Soviet planetary exploration technology**. The mission demonstrated both the ambition and the technical difficulties involved in early attempts to explore Mars with robotic spacecraft. Together with the other Soviet Mars missions of the 1960s and 1970s, it provided experience in interplanetary navigation, spacecraft communications, atmospheric entry, and lander design. Mars 7 is therefore remembered less for scientific discoveries than as part of the long process of experimentation and technological development that eventually made increasingly sophisticated exploration of Mars possible.
