The **Ottoman Empire** was one of the largest and longest-lasting empires in world history, existing from the late thirteenth century until its dissolution in 1922. It was founded around 1299 by Osman I, a Turkish tribal leader in northwestern Anatolia, whose descendants gradually expanded their territory at the expense of the declining Byzantine Empire and other neighboring states. Over the following centuries, the Ottomans built a powerful military and administrative system that enabled them to conquer vast regions of southeastern Europe, western Asia, and North Africa. The capture of Constantinople in 1453 by Sultan Mehmed II marked a turning point, ending the Byzantine Empire and establishing the city—renamed Istanbul—as the Ottoman capital.

At its height during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, particularly under the reign of Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent (1520–1566), the Ottoman Empire stretched from Hungary in central Europe to Yemen on the Arabian Peninsula, and from Algeria in North Africa to the Persian Gulf. It controlled many important trade routes linking Europe and Asia, making it a major economic and political power. The empire was renowned for its highly organized government, professional army, and elite Janissary corps. Although Islam was the state religion, the Ottomans governed a remarkably diverse population of Muslims, Christians, and Jews, allowing many religious communities to manage their own affairs under the *millet* system.

The Ottoman Empire also became a center of art, architecture, literature, and science. Magnificent mosques, palaces, bridges, and public buildings were constructed throughout the empire, many designed by the celebrated architect Mimar Sinan. Ottoman culture blended Turkish, Persian, Arab, and Byzantine influences, creating a distinctive artistic and intellectual tradition. The empire encouraged scholarship, trade, and craftsmanship, while its strategic location helped facilitate the exchange of goods and ideas between Europe, Asia, and Africa. Istanbul grew into one of the world’s greatest cities, serving as a thriving hub of commerce, diplomacy, and culture for centuries.

Despite its long period of success, the Ottoman Empire gradually declined from the late seventeenth century onward due to military defeats, economic difficulties, nationalist movements, and increasing competition from European powers. Reform efforts during the nineteenth century, including the Tanzimat reforms, sought to modernize the state but could not halt its weakening position. The empire suffered heavy losses during the Balkan Wars and ultimately joined the Central Powers in the First World War. Following its defeat, much of its territory was occupied or partitioned, and the Turkish War of Independence led by Mustafa Kemal Atatürk resulted in the abolition of the Ottoman sultanate in 1922. The Republic of Turkey was proclaimed in 1923, bringing an end to an empire that had shaped the history of three continents for more than six hundred years.
