The **Great Hinckley Fire** was a devastating forest fire that swept through east-central Minnesota on **September 1, 1894**, destroying the town of Hinckley and several surrounding communities. The disaster followed an exceptionally hot and dry summer, during which forests, logging debris, sawdust, and other vegetation had become dangerously combustible. Small fires had already been burning throughout the region, but on September 1 strong winds caused them to grow rapidly and merge into a massive firestorm. The resulting wall of flame moved with extraordinary speed, giving residents very little time to escape.

Hinckley, a major lumber town located between Minneapolis–Saint Paul and Duluth, was particularly vulnerable because it was surrounded by forests and large quantities of logging waste. As the fire approached, the sky darkened with smoke and burning debris, while intense winds carried flames across roads and natural barriers. Many residents fled toward railway lines, open ground, and bodies of water. Some survived by taking refuge in the **Grindstone River**, wells, or a water-filled gravel pit. Others escaped aboard trains that hurriedly carried passengers away as flames engulfed the surrounding countryside.

The Great Hinckley Fire became one of the deadliest wildfires in United States history and demonstrated the dangers created by the logging practices of the late nineteenth century. Lumber companies commonly left branches, treetops, sawdust, and other highly flammable material scattered across cleared land, providing enormous quantities of fuel during droughts.
