As the Queen departed from Windsor Railway Station after attending a service of thanksgiving, Maclean stepped forward from the crowd and fired a pistol in her direction. The shot missed its mark—reportedly deflected by a slight movement at the crucial moment—and Victoria remained unharmed. Bystanders quickly subdued Maclean before he could attempt another shot, preventing what might have become a national tragedy.

The attack was not an isolated episode in Victoria’s long reign.
